Does Mushroom Coffee Have Caffeine? How Much, Brand by Brand

Does Mushroom Coffee Have Caffeine? How Much, Brand by Brand

Written by the Enoki Cafe team. We make mushroom coffee, including a caffeine-free blend, so we've linked every competitor figure below to the brand's own website.

Quick answer

Mushrooms don't contain caffeine, but most mushroom coffee does. The caffeine comes from whatever the mushrooms are mixed with: coffee beans, tea, matcha or cacao. Depending on the brand, a serving ranges from about 150 mg (as much as regular coffee) down to none at all.

If you want zero caffeine, look for a blend with no coffee or tea in the ingredient list, like a chicory and dandelion base.

Why mushrooms themselves have no caffeine

Caffeine is made by a short list of plants: coffee, tea, cacao, yerba mate, guarana and kola nut. Fungi aren't on it. Lion's Mane, Chaga, Cordyceps, Reishi, Shiitake and Turkey Tail don't produce caffeine, whether you eat them whole or take them as an extract.

So when people feel more alert after a cup of mushroom coffee, there are two possibilities: the drink contains coffee, tea or cacao, or it's the ritual of a warm drink and a pause. If you've ever wondered why one brand gives you a buzz and another doesn't, the answer is almost always in the base ingredient, not the mushrooms.

The three types of mushroom coffee

Every product sold as "mushroom coffee" falls into one of three groups. Knowing which one you're looking at tells you most of what you need to know about caffeine.

1. Coffee + mushroomsReal coffee (ground or instant) with mushroom extract added. Caffeine is close to a normal cup, sometimes a little less because some of the volume is mushroom powder.
2. Tea or cacao + mushroomsA coffee alternative built on black tea, matcha or cacao. Usually around a third to half of a regular coffee's caffeine.
3. Caffeine-free base + mushroomsRoasted chicory, dandelion root, barley or similar. Tastes roasty like coffee but has no coffee or tea, so no added caffeine.
How much caffeine is in mushroom coffee? Brand by brand

Here's what the most popular brands publish about their own caffeine content, with regular coffee and decaf for reference. Serving sizes differ between brands, so check the cup size column.

Drink Type Caffeine Serving
Regular brewed coffee Coffee 113–247 mg 12 fl oz
Four Sigmatic Focus (ground) Coffee + mushrooms About 150 mg 12 fl oz
Enoki Mushroom Boost Instant Coffee Coffee + mushrooms [VERIFY] mg 1 serving
MUD\WTR matcha blend Tea + mushrooms 55 mg 1 serving
RYZE Mushroom Coffee Coffee + mushrooms 48 mg 1 serving
MUD\WTR coffee blend Coffee + mushrooms 45 mg 1 serving
Enoki 4-in-1 with Caffeine Caffeinated alternative [VERIFY] mg 1 serving
MUD\WTR Original Tea/cacao + mushrooms 35 mg 1 serving
Decaf coffee Decaffeinated coffee 2–15 mg 8 fl oz
MUD\WTR Turmeric / Rest Caffeine-free + mushrooms 0 mg 1 serving
Enoki Caffeine-Free 4-in-1 Caffeine-free + mushrooms No added caffeine* 1 serving

Coffee and decaf ranges are from the U.S. FDA. Brand figures are as published on each brand's own website, checked October 2026; formulas change, so check the current label. *Contains cacao, which naturally has trace caffeine.

Two things stand out. First, "mushroom coffee" isn't automatically low-caffeine: a coffee-based blend can match a regular cup. Second, the low-caffeine brands get there by replacing some or all of the coffee, not because the mushrooms cancel caffeine out. They don't.

Does RYZE or MUD\WTR have caffeine?
Does RYZE have caffeine?

Yes. RYZE is a coffee-based mushroom blend, and the brand lists 48 mg of caffeine per serving. That's roughly a third to half of a typical cup of brewed coffee: less than you're used to, but not caffeine-free. If you're cutting caffeine for sleep, pregnancy or sensitivity, RYZE still counts.

Does MUD\WTR have caffeine?

Most MUD\WTR blends do. According to MUD\WTR's own FAQ, the Original has 35 mg, the coffee blend 45 mg and the matcha blend 55 mg. Its Turmeric and Rest blends are caffeine-free, and its hot chocolate is described as "barely caffeinated."

Does Four Sigmatic have caffeine?

Four Sigmatic's coffees are real coffee with mushrooms added. Its Focus ground coffee lists about 150 mg per 12 oz cup, about the same as regular coffee. The brand also sells decaf versions, which still contain a small amount of caffeine, like any decaf.

Decaf mushroom coffee vs. caffeine-free mushroom coffee

These sound like the same thing, but they're not, and the difference matters if you're avoiding caffeine for a reason.

Decaf mushroom coffee Caffeine-free mushroom coffee
Base Decaffeinated coffee beans Chicory, dandelion, grains or herbs (no coffee)
Caffeine A little: decaf coffee has 2–15 mg per 8 oz, per the FDA None added
Taste Coffee, often slightly flatter Roasty and coffee-like, a little sweeter or more chocolatey
Acidity Coffee acidity remains No coffee, so no coffee acidity
Best for People who want the exact taste of coffee and can handle a few mg People cutting caffeine completely, evening drinkers, caffeine-sensitive drinkers

Source for decaf range: FDA, "Spilling the Beans."

Decaf is "mostly caffeine-free." A caffeine-free blend never had coffee in it to begin with. If two or three cups of decaf a day still affect your sleep, a caffeine-free base is the cleaner choice.

Want the ritual without the caffeine?

Enoki's Caffeine-Free 4-in-1 blends Lion's Mane, Chaga, Cordyceps and Shiitake with roasted chicory, dandelion and cacao. No coffee, no added caffeine, 30 servings a bag.

Front-of-bag phrases like "low caffeine," "clean energy" and "no jitters" don't tell you much. The ingredient list does.

  • Look for these words, which mean caffeine: coffee, instant coffee, arabica, robusta, black tea, green tea, matcha, yerba mate, guarana, cacao or cocoa (small amounts).
  • Check for a stated number. Good brands list caffeine in mg per serving. If they don't, ask them.
  • Read "decaf" as "low," not "zero." Decaffeinated coffee and tea still contain a little caffeine.
  • Look for a caffeine-free base: chicory root, dandelion root, roasted barley, carob or similar.
  • Check the mushroom source while you're there. "Fruiting body" means the actual mushroom; "mycelium" or "myceliated grain" often means a lot of grain filler. More on fruiting body vs. mycelium.

Are quitting caffeine, sensitive to it, or drinking after noon A caffeine-free blend, like Enoki Caffeine-Free 4-in-1
Want to add mushrooms to the coffee you already drink Mushroom tincture drops

How to cut caffeine without the headaches

If you drink coffee every day and want to cut back, the FDA advises doing it gradually. Caffeine withdrawal isn't dangerous, but it can be unpleasant: headaches, tiredness and irritability are common for a few days. Swapping one cup at a time works well:

  1. Week 1: replace your afternoon coffee with a caffeine-free mushroom coffee.
  2. Week 2: replace your second morning cup, or switch it to a low-caffeine blend.
  3. Week 3: make the caffeine-free cup your first of the day. Keep the same mug and the same time; the ritual is half the habit.

For healthy adults, the FDA says 400 mg of caffeine a day is not generally associated with negative effects. People who are pregnant, nursing, on certain medications or sensitive to caffeine may need much less, so check with your healthcare provider. Mushroom coffee and medications.

Frequently asked questions
Do mushrooms have caffeine?

No. Caffeine is made by plants like coffee, tea, cacao and guarana. Mushrooms, including Lion's Mane, Chaga, Cordyceps and Reishi, don't produce it.

Does Lion's Mane have caffeine?

No. Lion's Mane is caffeine-free. Any caffeine in a Lion's Mane coffee comes from the coffee, tea or cacao it's blended with.

Is mushroom coffee caffeine-free?

Usually not. Most mushroom coffees are made with coffee or tea and contain anywhere from about 35 mg to 150 mg per serving. Only blends built on a caffeine-free base, such as chicory and dandelion, have no added caffeine.

How much caffeine is in mushroom coffee?

It depends on the brand. Published figures range from about 150 mg per 12 oz (Four Sigmatic Focus) to 48 mg (RYZE) and 35 mg (MUD\WTR Original), down to none in caffeine-free blends.

Does mushroom coffee have less caffeine than regular coffee?

Many do, but not all. Blends that replace some of the coffee with mushrooms, tea or cacao usually have less. Blends that add mushrooms to a full serving of coffee can have about the same as a regular cup.

Can I drink mushroom coffee at night?

A caffeine-free blend, yes. A coffee- or tea-based blend still contains caffeine and can affect sleep, so treat it like any other caffeinated drink.

Is decaf mushroom coffee caffeine-free?

No. Decaf coffee still has a small amount of caffeine: the FDA puts it at 2 to 15 mg per 8 oz cup. For zero added caffeine, choose a blend with no coffee or tea in it.

Will I get caffeine withdrawal switching to mushroom coffee?

If you switch from regular coffee to a caffeine-free blend all at once, you might get a few days of headaches or tiredness. Cutting back one cup at a time usually avoids that.
